Citizens, employers, educators, and government are waking up to the need for rapid and thoughtful change within cultural, operational and technological realms to balance human activity and ecological health. Citizens, you and me, are the link connecting business, government, neighborhoods, faith groups and all other forms of human communities to the natural world of which we are a part.
The Northwest Earth Institute is a recognized national leader in the development of innovative programs that empower individual and organizations to protect the Earth and human health. NWEI offers eight discussion guides for individuals and organizations on a variety of sustainability topics, including: Menu for the Future, Voluntary Simplicity, Sustainable Systems at Work, Choices for Sustainable Living, Global Warming: Changing CO2urse, Discovering a Sense of Place, Healthy Children - Healthy Planet, and Exploring Deep Ecology. These study guides for small groups are available to those who wish to foster dialogue and take action in workplaces, homes, classrooms, libraries, centers of faith, neighborhoods, and community centers throughout North America.
NWEI programs encourage participants to explore their values, attitudes and actions through discussion with other people. These programs are organized around three key principles:
1) Become more educated about current ecological health, our connection to the natural world and new visions of a sustainable future,
2) promote a greater sense of personal obligation for addressing environmental health,
3) develop new habits and take action. Each guide contains a series of articles, book excerpts and discussion questions for the group to follow. Groups are self - facilitated, meeting from four to nine times depending on the program chosen, and can take place anywhere people naturally gather. No outside facilitator is needed.
Since NWEI’s founding in 1993, over 100,000 participants in all 50 states and Canada have participated in NWEI small group discussions, creating a network of dedicated volunteers and citizen leaders taking action to address ecological and social concerns.
We invite you to join these important discussions and take action to create a more sustainable future by beginning a NWEI discussion course in your community today. Please visit our website for a completelisting of our programs and to download flyers for each course.
